For years, The Saints have had a growing need for a bilingual staff member to minister to Spanish-speaking inmates, especially within the Federal prison system. Now, with Hispanics becoming America’s largest and fastest-growing minority, that need has become even more critical.
God’s answer has been to send Rodolfo “Tote” (pronounced To-tay) Jimenez to our ministry. Tote joined our staff in May of 2003 as a part-time Director of Spanish Ministries. He is a native of Guadalajara, Mexico and now lives with his wife Debby in Mt. Ephraim, NJ.
Statistics show that 80% of the inmate population won’t attend a formal religious program. They will, however, attend a sporting event at which the Word of God is preached. Softball and basketball have proven to be only marginally attractive to the Hispanic population. Soccer, on the other hand, has been welcomed with great enthusiasm and has allowed The Saints to minister to a portion of the population we rarely saw before.
It is becoming more evident each time we enter a prison and Tote preaches in Spanish to the Hispanic crowd that this is a crucial ministry to The Saints. Tote also plays on our Soccer team, grades Bible lessons and writes to the Hispanic inmates who contact The Saints.
As Tote said, “one of the greatest blessings that God has given me is going to the prisons and meeting many of these inmates. Many of them come up to me just to give me a hug and say a sincere ‘thank you.’ They tell me how the studies and/or the letters that I have sent them have been a blessing to their lives. ”
